Horten Ho XII

The Ho 12 was a light side by side two seater with a 100 hp engine. It was intended as a private owners coupe but R.L.M. were interested in it as a trainer. The first of the type was built and flown at Goettingen, where it was found destroyed in June 145, as a glider; work was also in progress at Kirtorf where a mock up of the power center section was found, badly damaged by fire.

On a trip to Chemnitz, we were able to inspect the auxiliary powerplant of a He 177. It was powered by a six cylinder DKW engine, developing 90 HP. We decided that it would be perfect for a light trainer that was needed to prepare pilots for the Ho VII.

The Ho XII was built secretly, as official approval was not expected. Again the "Mustang" airfoil was used, however with higher Re numbers than the ill fated Ho IV b.

Scheidhauer test flew the two place side-by-side machine as a glider near the end of 1944. The flight was too short to test the airfoil. The DKW engine was never installed.

If it had been given the chance, I feel that this aircraft would have become a very attractive club trainer.
